| | The jewel in Benalmadena’s crown is its leisure marina, with over 1000 berths and more being built, exclusive apartment complex’s’, exclusive shopping, dining and nightlife it is rated as one of the best harbour’s in the world. Benalmadena Marina is rightly known as Puerto Deportivo de Benalmadena (Benalmadena Sports Harbour). The port has won acclaim worldwide and awards as the best port in the Mediterranean region. The port you see today started life 35 years ago as a simple basin used mainly by fishermen. Most of the construction that has made up the port is sited on reclaimed land with the first island being constructed about 15 years ago. There are now 3 islands of apartments making up the central area of the port, accessible by bridges and surrounded by exclusive yachts. Some of the current owners include Antonio Banderas, Ryan Giggs and Teddy Sheringham. The centre island, where Antonio Banderas has an apartment is named after his wife, Melanie Griffiths. With over 1,000 berths in the harbour, it is no wonder that you will find celebrity yacht owners in residence and some of the famous owners include Rod Stewart, Michael Schumacher and King Farouk. Over the last few years the area around the port has been developed into a modern leisure complex thriving with bars, restaurants and shops. To the left of the main port you will find the famous area of music bars and discos.
Arroyo de la Miel, has become a popular residential area and the commercial centre of Benalmadena, leaving the coastal area to dedicate itself to tourism. It is in Arroyo that most of the new residential building is taking place which consists of a mixture of modern villas, townhouses and apartment complexes. In the thriving shopping area, almost anything can be bought and with an industrial area tucked away out of sight of the town you will find every aspect is catered for. Arroyo has become an ever popular place for British ex-pats to set up home and at times it almost resembles a modern day English market town. Walking along the street you are as likely to hear English being spoken as you are Spanish. Arroyo also benefits from a train station situated next to the cable car and Tivoli World, linking it to Malaga and Fuengirola. Because of these attractions, many people who visit Benalmadena fail to notice that further up the hill lays the secret of Benalmadena Pueblo. Benalmadena Pueblo is a delightful little gem and is full of narrow, winding streets, flower covered balconies and whitewashed houses, making it a beautiful example of real Spain which makes a must visit for anyone in the area.
